The practical day skipper course is designed to help students achieve a certain standard and ability to be able to safely skipper a yacht, by day, in familiar waters.
This course gives our students the opportunity to put all their shorebased knowledge into practise, applying it to the real life environment and helping them become safe and competent skippers. Many students go one to charter at home and abroad and this certificate is often the minimum standard required by most charter companies to charter a boat. When you have attained the Day Skipper certificate the ICC is free.

This course is designed for someone who perhaps has dinghy experience, but no cruising experience to date and therefore knows they would like to progress their seamanship skills further. Our students will gain an understanding in all aspects of running a cruising yacht and will have enough knowledge and skills to become a useful crew member on future sailing trips.
The RYA Cruising scheme is designed to advance students knowledge and experience step-by step, the next practical step from here being the Day Skipper course. This is when students should be considering attaining the Day Skipper Theory certificate in preparation for the next practical.
This course is ideal for novices in providing a short introduction to sail cruising over a two day period. By the end of the course our students will have experienced many of the basics to sail cruising, including helming, sail handling, ropework, tacking, gybing, preparation for mooring, basic engine checks and also the all essential safety awareness for the crew and yacht in safe haven or at sea.
We aim to ensure that all our students leave us having had a good all round introduction and can plan for their future. Holders of a Start Yachting certificate can also obtain a Competent Crew certificate by completing a further three days sailing or two weekends of the Competent Crew course.
